What is an exoskeleton: the complete 2026 guide

An exoskeleton is a wearable machine that adds power to your own movement. The kind we sell and rent at Elegs is a lower-body exoskeleton: a hip belt and two thigh cuffs with a small motor at each hip. When you climb, the motors push your legs forward and up, so a 1,000 m ascent feels closer to 500 m. Think of it as an e-bike for walking. It does not move for you. It moves with you.

How a hiking exoskeleton works

Every powered exoskeleton has the same four parts: a frame that transfers load to your hips, motors that deliver torque, a battery, and sensors plus software that decide when to help. Dozens of times per second, the sensors read your gait and the motors add a burst of assistance at exactly the moment your leg swings forward. Stop walking and it stops. There is no throttle and no learning curve beyond the first ten minutes.

Two numbers tell you most of what you need to know. Torque (measured in newton-metres per leg) is how hard it pushes. Range (in kilometres) is how far one charge lasts. A modern hiking exoskeleton delivers 15 to 25 Nm per leg and 14 to 30 km of range, weighs under 2.5 kg, and straps on in under a minute over normal hiking trousers.

What it actually does for you

  • Climbs feel easier. Independent studies put the reduction in metabolic effort on inclines at roughly 10 to 20 percent.
  • You go further on the same energy, or the same distance with energy to spare for the descent.
  • It takes load off the knees on the way up. Descents are helped less, since the assistance is tuned for the push phase.
  • It opens trails back up for people whose range has shrunk with age or a recovering joint.

What it is not

It is not a mobility device for people who cannot walk. It is not a robot suit, and it will not let you carry a fridge uphill. It is an assist, like a tailwind that follows you up the mountain. If you can hike slowly today, it makes you hike comfortably. If you cannot hike at all, it is the wrong tool.
